Gateshead 2-5 Ebbsfleet United
Johnson 45+1, 66 Kedwell 33 pen, 61,71 Coulson 74 Powell 83
Ebbsfleet United earned an important win with a 5-2 victory over Gateshead at the International Stadium this evening.
Danny Kedwell got a hat-trick for the visitors, and his goals were supplemented by goals from Luke Coulson and Jake Powell.
Gateshead top scorer Danny Johnson scored both goals for the hosts.
Both sides came into the game with completely different mindsets. With two games left, it was a meaningless game for mid-table Gateshead but for Ebbsfleet it really mattered as a win would take them into the play-off spots.
It was a fairly even start to the game, and the best chance of the first half hour came to the hosts when Wes York made a brilliant run on the right hand side and he put a good ball in-towards Patrick McLaughlin but his shot was blocked.
The tide of the game changed dramatically in the 33rd minute however, as Ebbsfleet were awarded a penalty after keeper James Montgomery was alleged to have brought Coulson down in the box.
Former Gillingham striker Kedwell stepped up and his penalty was poor but he still put his side in front as it came off the post and in.
Gateshead got an equaliser at the best possible time however, as Johnson scored a rebound after McLaughlin’s effort was parried in the first minute of added time.
15 minutes into the second half, Ebbsfleet were in front again as Kedwell got the ball in space on the right and fired it into the bottom-left corner.
Gateshead equalised once again however five minutes later, when Johnson scored another rebound following a McLaughlin strike.
Another five minutes later, it was 3-2 to the visitors as Kedwell smashed the ball into the bottom left corner following a great corner along the ground from Powell.
Ebbsfleet added a fourth with ease in the 74th minute when Coulson got the ball in plenty of space and he was able to curl the ball excellently into the top-right corner.
The impressive Powell put the icing on the cake in the 83rd minute when his powerful effort was tipped onto the crossbar by Montgomery but he was there to head home the rebound.
The result means Ebbsfleet move up to 5th in the National League table.
