Macclesfield Town 0-1 Morecambe

Sutton 65

Morecambe grabbed a narrow 1-0 victory over Macclesfield Town at Moss Rose in League 2 yesterday evening.

Ritchie Sutton’s second half header was the only goal separating the two sides.

Macclesfield came into the game sitting in fourth position having only lost once so far, while Morecambe were in 19th having not yet won a game.

The hosts started the game the better side and came close 11 minutes in when Jak McCourt’s short free kick took a deflection on its way out of play.

Five minutes later, Theo Archibald’s powerful long range strike hit the bar on its way over.

Morecambe’s Barry Roche was later forced to make a good save, parrying the ball onto the post following Fiacre Kelleher’s header from a corner in the 38th minute.

The Shrimps took the lead in the 65th minute when Sutton headed home on the end of a great cross by fellow centre-half Steven Old.

Jim Bentley’s side almost doubled their lead six minutes later when Shaun Miller beat ‘keeper Owen Evans on the right and his effort from a tight angle hit the post.

Morecambe continued to look more settled since their goal, and came close again in the 78th minute when substitute Andrew Tutte’s effort went just wide.

Macclesfield came close right at the very end when Emmanuel Osadebe fired the ball just over the bar.

Up next for the Shrimps is Exeter City at home on Saturday while the Silkmen host Scunthorpe United.

A late goal from Nathan Blissett ensured Macclesfield Town got a 1-0 win over Gateshead in the National League this evening.
Promotion-chasing Macclesfield came into today’s game knowing that a win would mean they would overtake Sutton United and go top, while the Heed were searching for a lift after being knocked out of the FA Trophy on Saturday.
The hosts started the game lively and just two minutes in Tyrone Marsh’s volley on the end of Elliott Durrell’s impressive cross was tipped over by James Montgomery.
Marsh came close again three minutes later when he got the ball in space on the right but his effort went just wide.
Macclesfield’s next chance came in the 22nd minute when Blissett’s shot was cleared off the line by Russell Penn.
Gateshead’s first real chance came ten minutes later when Danny Johnson’s close range volley from a corner was saved by Shwan Jalal.
Macclesfield had another chance to score just two minutes from half time when Gateshead’s Richard Peniket gifted the ball to Jared Hodgkiss and the full back fired wide.
The hosts came very close again in the 52nd minute when Marsh’s shot was saved without being held by Montgomery before Danny Whitaker’s effort was cleared off the line and then he fired over.
Mitch Hancox then came very close for the Silkmen in the 78th minute when his long range effort was pushed wide.
Macclesfield got their long-awaited goal in the 89th minute when the ball bounced off Blissett following a good cross to beat Montgomery after a mix up between him and his defence.
