Darlington Railway Athletic 0-4 Seaham Red Star

Prudhoe 9 Scorer 60 Bird 61 Hodgson 86

Seaham Red Star progressed to the third round of the Ebac Northern League Cup with a dominant 4-0 victory over Darlington Railway Athletic yesterday evening.

There were some unfamiliar names on the scoresheet with new signing Bailey Prudhoe scoring on debut, and rare goals coming from David Scorer and Liam Hodgson.

Captain Robbie Bird scored the other goal for Chris McCabe’s side, in what was a brilliant night for the Star.

17-year-olds Bailey Prudhoe and Harry Johnson were added to an injury-hit Seaham side on loan from Sunderland and Spennymoor Town respectively ahead of the game while the hosts, who sit 20th in Division 2, could only name three substitutes.

The visitors’ pace troubled RA from the start, and it only took nine minutes for them to take the lead.

Alex Ramshaw made a good run on the right and his pinpoint ball was backheeled by Prudhoe past keeper Paul Griffiths with class.

Five minutes later, Seaham were awarded a penalty after Thomas Scott was brought down, but Aaron Croft’s penalty was poor and kept out by Griffiths to his right as a result.

The home side only really threatened on one occasion when in the 25th minute Dominic Joynes got the ball in space only for him to shoot straight at Jordan Harkess.

The Star came incredibly close to doubling their lead five minutes later when Scott hit the crossbar.

After the break, Seaham’s dominance continued and they doubled their lead 15 minutes into the half.

Scorer’s free header on the end of a corner was cleared off the line, but the centre-half smashed the rebound into the top corner.

The visitors started to run away with the game as just moments later Bird cut in from the left and buried the ball into the bottom-right to make it 3-0.

McCabe’s side sealed the victory three minutes from time when substitute Hodgson beat a defender and slotted home in the bottom-left corner.

Following the win, McCabe said: “I’m pleased with the performance. I thought we dominated the game and should’ve really scored more goals, but after a disappointing defeat on Friday it was basically come here and get a positive result which we did.

“It’s always nice to win a game of football after you’ve just been beat.

“It gives the lads a bit more of a g-up for Saturday at home to Ashington.”
