Ebac Northern League Division 1
Hebburn Town 0-1 Shildon
Greulich-Smith 25 pen
Hebburn Town suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of promotion rivals Shildon in the Northern League Division 1 yesterday afternoon.
Billy Greulich-Smith’s penalty was the only goal to separate the two sides on the day.
Hornets manager Kevin Bolam named an unchanged side after an impressive 4-1 win over Newton Aycliffe in midweek.
Shildon started the game brighter and Greulich-Smith came close 15 minutes in when he got on the end of a good long ball forward and lobbed the ball over Hebburn ‘keeper Mark Foden and over the bar.
10 minutes later, the visitors were awarded a penalty when Foden tripped Greulich-Smith in the box, and Greulich-Smith smashed the ball in the top-right corner to score his 31st goal of the season.
Shildon continued to create chances and in the 37th minute they came close when Joe Posthill cut through on the right and his shot went narrowly wide.
Chances were few and far between after that however and it wasn’t until the 79th minute when Michael Richardson’s free kick was tipped over the bar by visiting ‘keeper Shaun Newbrook.
Hebburn continued to push for an equaliser and in the 87th minute Darren Lough’s volley went just over the bar.
However, Shildon defended well and held on for the win which sees them open up the gap between second and third by three points.
