Edwards 51

Liam Boyce scored a hat-trick for Burton Albion on Tuesday night as his side thumped Morecambe 4-0 in the Carabao Cup 2nd Round.

Ryan Edwards scored the other goal to separate the two sides early in the second half.

Morecambe came firing out of the blocks quickly as Lewis Alessandra was one-on-one with former Shrimps loanee Kieran O’Hara but it was saved by the legs of the young ‘keeper in the second minute.

Four minutes later, Burton’s Stephen Quinn had a shot blocked by the visitors’ defence on its way out.

Chances were few and far between after that until the Brewers took the lead in the 34th minute through Boyce, who headed home at the far post on the end of a corner.

Two minutes later, Boyce almost had his second goal of the night but his one-on-one effort was saved by Morecambe’s Mark Halstead.

In the second minute of added time, Boyce doubled his goal tally of the night when he slid the ball home from close range following Oliver Sarkic’s cross into the box.

Nigel Clough’s side started the second half well and came close in the 49th minute when Lucas Akins’ close range header was kept out by Halstead.

Burton got their third of the night two minutes later when Edwards beat his man on the right and fired the ball into the bottom left corner.

In the 63rd minute, Morecambe had a rare chance when Kevin Ellison headed just wide on the end of Alessandra’s cross.

Five minutes later, Alessandra made a good run on the right and his shot was saved by the legs of O’Hara.

Boyce humiliated the Shrimps even further in the 74th minute when he volleyed home after a poorly defended corner to get his hat-trick.

Chances were few and far between after that and Jim Bentley’s side avoided any further humiliation.

Morecambe slip to defeat against Exeter in five-goal thriller

Exeter (H)

Morecambe 2-3 Exeter City

Alessandra 45+4, 63  Taylor 21

Martin 25

Law 85

Morecambe suffered their second league defeat of the season in a five-goal thriller at the Globe Arena this afternoon.

Exeter scored two goals in the space of five minutes through Jake Taylor and Aaron Martin, before Lewis Alessandra got a goal back for the Shrimps just before half time.

Midway through the second half, Alessandra grabbed an equaliser before Nicky Law got the winner for the visitors five minutes from time.

Exeter came into the game sitting in fourth following a goalless draw with Oldham Athletic on Tuesday, while Morecambe made one change following a 1-0 win over Macclesfield in mid-week.

It was a relatively quiet start to the game in terms of chances, and the first notable moment came in the 21st minute when Taylor buried the ball in the bottom right corner on the end of Martin’s cross to put the visitors in front.

Five minutes later, Exeter doubled their lead when the Shrimps failed to clear their lines following a slide tackle and Martin put the ball away unopposed.

Matt Taylor’s side almost had a third in the 30th minute when Law’s shot was saved by the legs of Barry Roche.

On the brink of half time, Martin had a goal disallowed for the Grecians, shortly before Alessandra smashed the ball into the top right corner from the edge of the box to get one back for the hosts.

In the 63rd minute, Morecambe equalised when Shaun Miller put in a good ball towards Cole Stockton who passed it on the volley to Alessandra and he put the ball past the keeper.

Chances were few and far between after that until in the 85th minute when Exeter got the winner through Law. A long throw was poorly defended enabling Law to bury the ball home into the bottom-right corner.

Morecambe’s Sam Lavelle was sent off for a second bookable offence in the second minute of added time, shortly before Andrew Tutte’s strike was blocked by a defender in the last minute of the game.

The result means Exeter go top while the Shrimps drop one place down to 18th.
