Chertsey Town won the FA Vase with an exciting extra time win over Cray Valley Paper Mills at Wembley.

Gavin Tomlin put Cray Valley in front ten minutes before half time but their lead only lasted three minutes as Sam Flegg equalised moments later.

Chertsey took the lead in extra time when Jake Baxter scored from the spot and then Quincy Rowe got the winner three minutes from time.

It was a first FA Vase final for both sides, with Chertsey beating Northwich Victoria in the previous round and Cray Valley beating Canterbury City.

It was a quiet opening to the game until Chertsey came close in the 19th minute when Baxter’s overhead kick went over the bar.

In the 31st minute, the Curfews had an effort denied when Lubomir Guentchev’s free kick brought a diving save to the right from Andy Walker.

Tomlin opened the scoring for Cray Valley Paper Mills in the 36th minute as he latched onto a good through ball from Danny Smith and buried the ball past the keeper from close range.

Chertsey equalised three minutes later when Flegg headed against the post from a corner before putting away the rebound.

The Surrey side had an early chance four minutes into the second half when Lewis Driver headed over the bar on the end of a corner.

In the 59th minute, Chertsey came close again when Baxter took the ball past the last defender and his effort went just wide.

Chances were few and far between in the following half hour until Cray Valley’s Ashley Sains had a header from a corner just kept out by Nick Jupp.

Cray Valley came very close to winning the game right at the end of normal time when Anthony Edgar struck the crossbar from just inside the box.

Just before half time in extra time, Chertsey were awarded a penalty when Cem Tumkaya brought down Lubomir Guentchev just inside the box, and Baxter stepped up and buried it down the bottom left corner.

The Curfews got their winner in the 117th minute when Rowe linked up well with Guentchev before firing it into the bottom right corner.
