Sky Bet League 2
Morecambe 0-1 Barnet
Barnet got a 1-0 win to beat Morecambe and take the relegation battle right down to the last day.
Alex Nicholls’ second half strike separated the two sides.
Today’s game was a massive game for both sides with Morecambe sitting 22nd in League 2 and Barnet 23rd. The hosts required just a point to secure their league status for another season and relegate the visitors in the process.
It was a fairly poor start to the game for the Shrimps with Barnet looking more likely to score.
The visitors nearly took the lead ten minutes in when right-back Richard Brindley’s powerful effort went just wide.
While Morecambe’s Adam McGurk made it through on goal shortly after, it came to nothing as he was beaten by the keeper.
Barnet came close once again in the 22nd minute after there was a mix up between Sam Lavelle and keeper Barry Roche, but Roche managed to clear the ball away despite pressure from John Akinde.
Chances were then few and far between, and the next chance for the visitors came six minutes into the second half when Akinde had the ball in the box unmarked but his powerful shot brought a brilliant save from Roche.
At the other end moments later, Morecambe came rather close when Callum Lang was through on goal but his shot was blocked and Adam Campbell failed to put away the rebound.
Substitute Nicholls then came close for Barnet four minutes later but his powerful shot brought a great reflex save from Roche.
In the 79th minute, Nicholls took the lead for the visitors when he found the ball in space and fired it into the bottom left corner to send the away fans wild.
Three minutes later, Akinde found himself through on goal for the visitors but his shot was blocked.
Morecambe threw men forward understandably but failed to get an equaliser.
The result means the Shrimps sit just two points above the drop zone and need a result at play-off chasing Coventry City next week. Barnet will be confident they can stay up though, as they face already relegated Chesterfield at home next week.
