Morecambe slumped to their sixth consecutive defeat, ensuring they didn’t pick up any points in March, with a 3-1 loss against Mansfield Town at the Globe Arena yesterday.

Mansfield started the game very well, and were straight out of the traps. Matt Green headed just over the bar on the end of a good cross three minutes in, shortly before Danny Rose put the Stags in front. The away side caught the Shrimps defence half-asleep, with a quick throw-in making its way towards the former Bury frontman – who buried the ball from close range with ease.

The away side’s lead only lasted two minutes however, as Paul Mullin equalised for the home side. Roche played a good long ball towards Mullin, who only had the last man to beat. He beat the defender, and slotted the ball past Mansfield keeper Kean.

Morecambe grew into the game gradually, and Aaron Wildig came close in the eighth minute with his shot deflecting off a defender and going out for a corner. Michael Rose then had a good attempt at goal with his curved shot going just over the bar in the 14th minute for the home side.

Mansfield later had a few chances, exposing Morecambe’s weak defence. Shaquile Coulthirst cut through the defence with ease from the left-hand side, shooting straight at Roche in the 17th minute and then five minutes later Alex MacDonald’s goal-bound free kick deflected off Matt Green and went wide.

Roughly ten minutes later, the away side were back in front. Roche played out a poor goal-kick along the floor to Michael Rose, who didn’t take full control of the ball, and as a result Danny Rose was able to capitalise on this for the away side with a good run and a shot beating Roche to his left despite the keeper getting a touch to the ball on its way in.

Morecambe came close five minutes later, after a good ball to Turner. He made a run before giving the ball to Fleming, who could only hit the ball over the bar.

Just moments later, Mansfield went up the other end and got a third goal. Peterborough loanee Shaquile Coulthirst was on the receiving end of a good ball, and he was able to play it to Benjamin Whiteman – who buried the ball pass Roche to extend the Stags’ lead. Steve Evans’ side led 3-1 at half time.

Morecambe began the second half with great attacking intent. Aaron Wildig found himself through on goal, forcing Kean to make a good diving save to his left just fifteen seconds in.

Five minutes later however, Mansfield came close to getting a fourth goal. Danny Rose got through on goal as Luke Conlan fell, but luckily for the home side Dean Winnard managed to track back and diminish the threat that Rose posed, meaning that he could only shoot straight at Roche in the end. Shaquile Coulthirst later came close for the away side on 54 minutes, with his shot parried away by Roche.

There was action at both ends, with Paul Mullin finding an opening for the Shrimps two minutes later. The striker found himself in a good position to shoot, but his effort with his weaker foot went well wide of the mark.

Morecambe were forced to defend again, with Whiteman’s shot being blocked by Winnard. Whitmore’s clearance came off Coulthirst and luckily for the Burnley loanee the ball went over in the 61st minute.

There was little action for much of the rest of the second half, but Coulthirst’s shot went just wide in the 87th minute.

Substitute Luke Jordan had a late attempt on goal blocked by the defence for Morecambe a minute from time.

It was yet another poor day at the office for the Shrimps, and as a result they now sit in 19th place in the League 2 table. They face Cheltenham Town away from home next week. Mansfield on the other hand remain in ninth position, and are now just a point off the play-offs. They face Exeter City at home in their next game.
