Morecambe 1-2 Accrington Stanley
Wildig 82 McCartan 45+2, 66
Morecambe suffered their fifth consecutive defeat against local rivals Accrington Stanley at the Globe Arena last night. Shay McCartan scored the visitors’ two goals, with a free kick on the brink of half time and his second coming as a result of a defensive mistake from Alex Whitmore. Aaron Wildig got a goal back for the Shrimps and brought some momentum out of the side, but it was too little too late.
Accrington started the game well, showing a lot of energy and pace. They came close to taking the lead just four minutes in, with Noor Husin’s shot hitting the post.
Two minutes later Shay McCartan came close, with his shot going just wide, and then in the tenth minute Stanley got through the Morecambe defence with ease and McCartan’s shot went straight at Roche.
Morecambe’s best chance of the game without scoring came in the thirteenth minute. Lee Molyneux made a good run along the right-hand side, and he put a good ball in towards Whitmore – whose header went just wide of the mark.
Four minutes later, Stanley came close again with Sean McConville’s shot going just over the bar. They also came close in the 29th minute when they counter-attacked a poor Morecambe corner, but McCartan’s shot could only go over the bar.
Shay McCartan found himself involved in the action a lot during the first half, and he put Stanley in front just before half time. Ellison gave away a free kick in a dangerous position, and the striker was able to place the ball brilliantly in the top-right corner – beating Roche.
In the second half Morecambe came reasonably close to equalising two minutes in, but Rose didn’t quite connect with his shot and whilst Murphy put the ball in the back of the net, it was ruled offside.
Fifteen minutes later Dean Winnard put in a good ball for the home side, but Turner couldn’t quite get on the end of the ball- however if he had, there was every chance that he would’ve put the ball away.
In the 66th minute, Accrington extended their lead. John Coleman’s side hit the Shrimps on the break and last man Alex Whitmore fell over, giving Shay McCartan only the keeper to beat and the forward went up and did just that – slotting the ball past Roche to his right.
The only real save Accrington’s keeper really had to make came in the 75th minute. Kevin Ellison found the ball in the box, and his shot forced Rodak into a good diving save to his right.
Morecambe got a goal back in the 82nd minute through Aaron Wildig. Andy Fleming played a good ball to the attacking midfielder, who was situated on the right-flank at the time, and the ex-Cardiff man curled the ball into the top left corner with his left foot to give the Shrimps any kind of chance of getting a result.
Wildig’s goal gave the home side momentum, with the fans getting fully behind them and tension rising. Substitute Luke Conlan made a great run on the left-hand side two minutes later – giving the ball to Rose – whose shot was tipped over the bar by the keeper.
Whilst Jim Bentley’s side continued to put the pressure on for an equaliser towards the end, Accrington managed to hold on for the win – and the injury to Morecambe defender Ryan Edwards towards the end didn’t help.
The result means that Accrington move above the Shrimps in the league table, and now sit in 14th whilst Morecambe move down to 16th. Accrington face Grimsby Town next at home on Saturday, whilst the Shrimps are at home to Mansfield Town.
