Morecambe 0-1 Newport County
Bird 67 pen
Relegation contenders Newport County won their second consecutive game this evening, with a 1-0 victory over Morecambe at the Globe Arena. The only goal of the game came with Ryan Bird scoring from the spot in the 67th minute.
Morecambe started the game well, with a good through ball being played through to Rhys Turner on the right. The winger managed to get round the keeper, and his shot was cleared off the line in the second minute.
Moments later, Antony Evans attempted a lob for the home side but it didn’t trouble Newport keeper Chris Day.
Following this short spell of good play from the Shrimps, Newport dominated play and really should’ve gone in front. Tom Owen-Evans brought a good diving save out of Roche in the sixth minute, and five minutes later Joss Labadie’s header from a corner looked to be going in, but Whitmore managed to block it out for another corner.
After some poor defending from the resultant corner, Alex Samuel had a shot going just over the bar and then moments later Ryan Bird got on the end of a shot to deflect the ball and force Roche into an excellent diving save to his left.
Newport found themselves coming very close to scoring again in the 34th minute, when Scot Bennett’s long range shot forced a save from Roche- but he couldn’t push the ball away and the Shrimps’ defence just about managed to prevent the away side scoring from the rebound. Sean Rigg headed just wide on the end of a good cross from the right-hand side two minutes later, colliding with Whitmore in the process.
Despite all the chances Newport had, it was arguably Morecambe who had the best chance of the half. In the last minute of injury time, Antony Evans had a sweet strike from long range- hitting the crossbar. It was goalless at the break.
Four minutes into the second half it looked like Newport had taken the lead through Ryan Bird, but Dean Winnard managed to somehow keep the ball from crossing the line- controlling the ball comfortably.
Paul Mullin came close for the Shrimps in the 53rd minute, cutting in from the left, and his curled shot prompted an excellent diving save by Chris Day to his right- keeping the ball out.
Sean Rigg brought another good save out of Roche twelve minutes later, and then Morecambe hit the Welsh side on the counter-attack. Mullin made a good run along the right, and put in a good ball to Evans- whose shot went just wide of the mark.
By the 65th minute, Newport were awarded a penalty. Alex Whitmore brought down Alex Samuel in the box as he cut in from the right, and the referee didn’t really hesitate to point to the spot. Ryan Bird stepped up and took a brilliant penalty going nicely down the middle to beat Roche, who dived to his right.
Lee Molyneux had a shot blocked in the 71st minute, and roughly ten minutes later Michael Rose had a good long range effort- with his powerful shot going just wide.
Substitute Jazzi Barnum-Bobb looked threatening going forward for the away side, and his pace enabled him to get through a tired Morecambe defence with ease in the 86th minute- his shot going just wide.
Despite the fact that there were seven minutes added due to several long stoppages, Morecambe failed to make use of the extra time they had and Newport managed to hold on for the victory.
Morecambe remain in 15th following tonight’s result and face Plymouth Argyle away from home on Saturday, whilst Newport move off the bottom and face in-form Blackpool at Rodney Parade at the weekend.
