Crewe Alexandra 2-1 Morecambe
Kiwomya 19 Turner 8
Goals from Alex Kiwomya and James Jones ensured Crewe Alexandra came from behind to beat Morecambe on Tuesday night. Rhys Turner took the lead for the away side with some great counter-attacking play, whilst Kiwomya pounced on a rebound to equalise for Crewe before James Jones slotted home from close range just before the break.
Morecambe started the game very well, and could’ve taken the lead very early on with captain Peter Murphy hitting the ball just over the bar two minutes in.
Five minutes later, the Shrimps were in front after some impressive counter attacking play. Michael Rose made a great block from Kiwomya’s shot, and the ball went to Wildig who played a cracking through ball to Rhys Turner. The summer signing from Oldham, then ran very quickly along the right-hand side and smashed it in the top left hand corner- taking his first goal for the club in style.
Morecambe’s lead only lasted ten minutes however. Chris Dagnall had a shot saved by the legs of Barry Roche, and Chelsea loanee Alex Kiwomya fired the rebound into the top corner to get the home side back into the game.
Five minutes later, Crewe really should’ve gone in front. Shrimps defender Liam Wakefield slipped, meaning that Ryan Lowe was clean through on goal- but he took his shot prematurely meaning it didn’t test Barry Roche at all, as the ball went straight to him.
Whilst it was a fairly exciting game, and Morecambe were playing well, there were little noticeable chances in the first half. However, the home side punished the Shrimps for their poor defending just before half time. The away side left too much space on the left-hand side, and this enabled Oliver Turton to carry the ball in space and put the ball in the box to James Jones who slotted home stylishly from close range.
Just before half time, Morecambe did get a free kick in a threatening position- but Michael Rose could only hit it straight at the keeper so Crewe were in front at the break.
Two minutes into the second half, Aaron Wildig’s shot went just wide for the Shrimps.
The home side could’ve extended their lead in the 52nd minute, when Chris Dagnall found himself in plenty of space but the striker could only hit it over the bar.
Morecambe had a strong chance to get back in the game seven minutes later, but Peter Murphy’s shot was blocked from close range. Cole Stockton could only hit the ball over the bar for Jim Bentley’s side moments later. Whilst the Shrimps were creating chances their finishing wasn’t good enough in the final third.
Barry Roche kept Morecambe in with a chance with a crucial save from Kiwomya’s 63rd minute shot.
Whilst the away side were battling for an equaliser, they weren’t really getting anywhere with their chances as Crewe were strong at the back.
In contrast, Morecambe were fairly weak at the back- providing Crewe with some easy chances. Substitute Callum Saunders should’ve put the game to bed for the home side in the 79th minute, but he somehow managed to hit the ball over the bar despite having an open goal and being two yards out.
The Shrimps were throwing everyone forward in their quest for an equaliser. Ryan Edwards and James Jennings both wasted chances in the dying moments of the game, with long range shots going over the bar.
Crewe missed another sitter in the last minute of the game, with a good long ball being played to Harry Davis who headed it across goal to Lowe who shot wide despite being very close to the goal.
Morecambe looked to have a corner in the very last moments, and keeper Barry Roche began to run up for the corner looking for his second ever goal but it turned out to be a goal kick instead, much to the dismay of the travelling fans.
Some would argue that the Shrimps deserved to get something out of this game, but at the end of the day their defensive errors proved costly.
Crewe now sit in seventh ahead of their game away to Colchester on Saturday, whilst Morecambe move down to 20th and face league leaders Plymouth Argyle.
