Morecambe 0-2 Luton Town

Hylton 26

Vassell 60

Luton Town extended their unbeaten league run to nine games, with a comfortable win over Morecambe today. Danny Hylton took the lead for the away side 26 minutes in, finding himself in plenty of space and burying the ball in the bottom-right corner, whilst Isaac Vassell doubled Luton’s lead in the second half heading the rebound home off the crossbar.

The away side started really well and looked in control of the game from minute one. Danny Hylton had their first chance four minutes in, forcing Roche to save with his legs.

Three minutes later, Luton had a penalty appeal when Alex Whitmore appeared to bring down Isaac Vassell in the box but it was deemed a legal tackle by the referee to the relief of the home following.

It was very end to end for most of the first half, with both teams defending reasonably well. This all changed however in the 26th minute when Danny Hylton found himself in a lot of space. He made a good run to cut inside past the Morecambe defence and he beat Roche with a powerful well-drilled shot which beat the veteran shot-stopper in the bottom right-hand corner.

Four minutes later Hylton found himself in a very similar position again and had a similar shot, but this time it didn’t beat Roche- who made a good save to his right.

Morecambe had a few chances in the last ten minutes of the first half. Ryan Edwards was very ambitious in the 35th minute, winning the ball and hitting it just over the bar from long range with the keeper off his line.

Dean Winnard made good use of a free kick three minutes later, putting in a pin-point ball to Cole Stockton who turned and forced the visiting keeper into a good save to his left.

The home side had one of their best chances of the half towards the end, with Murphy, McGowan and Molyneux all linking up well with some good passing play. Molyneux put a good ball into the box, and the end result was that Kevin Ellison headed wide in the 43rd minute. The visitors led 1-0 at the interval.

Morecambe had a promising start to the second half as well, with Alex Whitmore heading just over the bar from an impressive James Jennings cross in the 46th minute.

Luton came very close to scoring in the 52nd minute with Justin having a powerful shot deflected off a defender to go wide. It looked to be going in otherwise.

They doubled their lead ten minutes later through Isaac Vassell. With Jennings failing to track back for the Shrimps, full back James Justin made good use of the space he had on the right flank. He made a good run, and then had a shot parried onto the crossbar before Isaac Vassell headed home the rebound.

Other than Lee Molyneux’s shot that was blocked by the Luton defence in the 62nd minute, the Shrimps never really threatened the away side in the second half. Nathan Jones’ side could’ve gone on to score two or three more goals with the chances that they had.

Danny Hylton linked up well with Mpanzu and they literally passed it round the Morecambe defence only for their effort to go into the side netting in the 64th minute.

Hylton had a shot cleared off the line by Winnard moments later, before he had a shot parried away by Barry Roche in the 77th minute.

It got worse for Morecambe in the 85th minute when they went down to ten men. Alex Whitmore was sent off for the second time this season with a rash challenge.

The Shrimps managed not to concede in the last ten minutes of the game (including added time) by which they were playing with ten men. They were lucky to only lose by a two-goal margin, and will look to put the result behind them as they face Crewe Alexandra away from home on Tuesday night.
