Sky Bet League 2

Morecambe 0-3 Carlisle United
	      Grainger 14
              Kennedy 73,78

A goal from captain Danny Grainger and a second-half brace from veteran midfielder Jason Kennedy earned Carlisle another three points today, meaning that they still haven’t lost in the League this season.

Grainger’s goal came as a result of some poor defending from the home side, whilst Kennedy scored a crafty overhead kick and a header from a corner in the second half of the game.

Morecambe did make a good start to the game however, with Paul Mullin having a shot blocked by the hand of a Carlisle defender. The resultant free kick in the fifth minute was stopped by the wall, but the Shrimps managed to get the ball in the box to Peter Murphy but unfortunately for them he was in an offside position.

Carlisle had their first real chance four minutes later, with Nicky Adams beating McGowan for pace and cutting inside, but his shot was saved and cleared out for a corner, which was ineffective.

In the fifteenth minute, Keith Curle’s side took the lead with their second chance of the game. Barry Roche parried away a shot, and Grainger picked up on the loose ball placing it in the right-hand corner with power, whilst Morecambe’s veteran keeper was vulnerable.

The game was fairly even for the next fifteen minutes, and chances were almost non-existent until Kevin Ellison made a cracking run with the ball, playing a good ball through to Barkhuizen. The impressive move ended with Peter Murphy’s shot, that went well wide of the mark in the 29th minute.

Five minutes later, ex Morecambe striker Shaun Miller found himself in acres of space but he could only shoot wide.

Cole Stockton had a shot well saved by Gillespie to his right in the 39th minute following a good run from Tom Barkhuizen for Morecambe.

There continued to be action at both ends towards the end of the first half, and Nicky Adams ended up being one-on-one with Roche moments later but his attempt was saved by the Irishman.

Morecambe’s best chance to equalise came on the brink of half time, when Barkhuizen made a great run to get on the end of Stockton’s pass only for his shot to go just over the bar. The Cumbrians were one goal in front at half time.

In the second half, Carlisle looked like doubling their lead early on with Shaun Miller putting in a good ball to Mike Jones only for his shot to be cleared off the line by Edwards two minutes in, and Danny Grainger’s impressive free kick was saved by Roche to his right moments later.

In the 51st minute, Morecambe’s Cole Stockton forced Mark Gillespie into another good save when he put in a strong header off the end of James Jennings’ long throw.

The away side thought that they had another opening five minutes later when Shaun Miller’s long range shot was saved, and Jabo Ibehre netted the rebound but his goal was ruled out as he was offside.

Miller continued to link up well with Ibehre, playing a great ball towards the big centre-forward, whose header was tipped over the bar by Barry Roche in the 62nd minute.

Substitute Jack Dunn had what appeared to be a rare Morecambe chance, with a long-range shot going just wide of the mark in the 71st minute,  and moments later Jason Kennedy scored an overhead kick for the away side with the Morecambe defence giving him way too much space..

Nicky Adams forced Barry Roche in another one-on-one save two minutes later and shortly after, Jason Kennedy headed home at ease from a corner to score his second of the game.

There were little chances in the last ten minutes, with the only two both involving Morecambe’s Cole Stockton. The Tranmere loanee had a shot blocked in the 84th minute, and also headed a rebound wide following Jack Dunn’s shot in added time.

It was yet another poor day at the office for Morecambe at the Globe Arena. Up next for Jim Bentley’s side is Notts County away from home on Tuesday, in the rearranged game following last week’s abandonment and then the Shrimps face Stevenage at home on the Saturday.
