EFL Cup 2nd Round- Tuesday 23rd August 2016

Preston North End 2-0 Oldham Athletic
Doyle 66
Hugill 81

Goals from second-half subsitutes Eoin Doyle and Jordan Hugill were enough for Preston North End to book a place in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday evening at Deepdale.

Eoin Doyle opened the scoring with a weak shot from close range in the 66th minute, and then Jordan Hugill got the winner after he headed home following a great ball from Doyle after a mistake from the keeper in the 81st minute.

The first ten minutes of the game were reasonably quiet, with no chances to note. The first chance came in the 13th minute when Jordan Hugill got on the end of a Ben Pearson free kick but it was headed straight into the hands of the keeper.

Five minutes later, the away side had their first chance of the game with Marc Klok taking the ball into a threatening position and putting a good ball across the back line but it was cleared by the Preston defence.

Chances were few and far between in the first half, with the home side’s only chances coming from Simon Makienok, who headed straight at the keeper on the end of a good free kick in the 20th minute, Alan Browne shooting over after a good move in the 30th minute and Hugill shooting over the bar with a 38th minute free kick. Oldham’s only chance in that space of time came from Ollie Banks, who shot over the bar after a good corner. It was goalless at the break.

It was a much more exciting second half however, with a goal looking much more likely.

Six minutes into the second half, Chris Humphrey and Tom Clarke combined to make a good move along the right-hand side, and Clarke put in a good ball that reached Pearson but unfortunately he couldn’t connect with it properly.

A minute later Jordan Hugill came close for the home side also, heading just wide at the end of some good counter-attacking play from Simon Grayson’s side.

Oldham had their first threatening chance of the half with Leeds loanee Lee Erwin forcing a good save from Chris Maxwell in the 59th minute with a powerful shot.

However the home side took the lead in the 66th minute through Eoin Doyle who got on the end of a good ball and controlled the ball onto his other foot before beating the keeper from close range.

The away side looked for an equaliser, and Lee Erwin came close with a shot that didn’t really test Chris Maxwell in the 73rd minute.

The home side should’ve had a second goal in the 77th minute after Callum Robinson found Eoin Doyle with a cracking ball, but unfortunately for the ex-Cardiff striker he wasn’t able to connect with it on the volley.

Five minutes later, Oldham’s keeper came out of his area and won the ball but he could only give the ball straight to Eoin Doyle, who was able to put a cracking ball in to Hugill who headed home into an open goal to secure the win for the Championship side.

Preston’s win means they will play Bournemouth away from home in the third round, and they are back in action on Saturday away to Ipswich in the Sky Bet Championship.
