Morecambe 1-2 Mansfield Town

Mullin pen 71 Clements 86 Yussuf 90

Two late goals from Chris Clements and Adi Yussuf was enough for Mansfield to snatch the three points at the Globe Arena this evening.

It was a very uneventful first half, with neither side having many chances, and it wasn’t very entertaining to watch from a fan’s point of view.

Mansfield had their only threatening chance in the first half when centre-half Krystian Pearce shot wide in the 28th minute after the ball fell to him in the box.

Paul Mullin had Morecambe’s best chance of the first half when he cut inside the box and had a left-footed shot well saved by visiting keeper Scott Shearer, before Ellison was ruled out offside when the ball fell to him in the 37th minute.

There wasn’t really any other moments of significance in the first half, and it was rather dull from both sides to say the least.

Luckily in the second half the game brightened up, and Paul Mullin could’ve scored in the 57th minute but he didn’t seem to have enough confidence to shoot.

Just moments later, Jim Bentley made three subs and these tactical changes paid dividends. One of the subs, Jamie Devitt, made a real difference to the Shrimps from the moment he came onto the pitch with the runs he was making and he changed the pace of the game as a result.

In the 70th minute Irishman Devitt put a good ball into the box and Kevin Ellison was brought down in the box by former Accrington defender Nicky Hunt, to give the Shrimps a penalty. Striker Paul Mullin scored the resultant penalty with a powerful shot to the bottom right of the goal to put the hosts in front.

Tom Barkhuizen, another Shrimps sub, could’ve doubled the lead five minutes later when he was clean through on goal, only for his shot to go wide.

Ten minutes later, Mansfield punished Morecambe for their lapse in concentration at the back when Chris Clements scored the rebound after Roche parried away Green’s initial shot.

The away side then scored the winning goal in the 90th minute, when some poor defending from the Shrimps led to substitute Adi Yussuf slotting home from close range to ensure that the Stags took back the three points to the Midlands.
