Morecambe 2-1 Yeovil Town
Ellison 74 Miller 80 Ward 69
Morecambe earned their second victory of 2016 in their first home game on a Saturday since October in snowy conditions today at the Globe Arena.
Both sides had early chances but it was the away side who had a very good chance to score when Ryan Edwards brought down a Yeovil player in the box, and they were awarded a penalty.
Matty Dolan stepped up to take the penalty, but it was saved by Barry Roche down to his right. This proved to be a very crucial moment of the game.
Morecambe came very close to taking the lead in the 27th minute when Jamie Devitt put in a cracking ball towards Aaron Wildig, whose powerful shot hit the post. Jim Bentley’s side weren’t short of chances in the first half, and they thought that they’d finally taken the lead in the 42nd minute when Kevin Ellison diverted Wildig’s shot into the goal but it was disallowed because the veteran forward was in an offside position.
The two sides went in level at the break, and the Shrimps players may have felt that they could’ve been at least 2-0 up at this point.
In the second half Morecambe lost star midfielder Aaron Wildig early on through a hamstring injury, which was a big blow, but this didn’t faze the Shrimps as Shaun Miller came very close to scoring in the 56th minute with him being clean through on goal only for his shot to be saved by the legs of Krysiak in the Yeovil goal.
Two minutes later Jim Bentley’s side had another excellent chance to go in front when Devitt hit a brilliant curved shot goalwards that was well saved by Krysiak to his left, and then Ellison scored the rebound only for it to be ruled out for offside again.
Roughly ten minutes later, Yeovil took the lead completely against the run of play when Darren Ward took advantage of a mistake from Barry Roche to put the ball in the back of the net.
The away side’s lead lasted only five minutes however, as Kevin Ellison equalised with a spectacular finish in the top corner of the goal just as he was going to ground. Another five minutes later, the Shrimps took the lead when Jamie Devitt put a cracking ball into the box after Fleming’s interception and in-form striker Shaun Miller curled the ball round the keeper with his left foot in what turned out to be the winning goal.
Towards the end of the game, Yeovil piled on the pressure and could’ve equalised right at the death when Iffy Allen got the ball in the box unmarked but his shot went well over the crossbar.
Morecambe move up to 13th, just four points off the play offs, whereas Yeovil remain in 23rd two points from safety.
