Morecambe 1-1 Exeter City

Miller 49 pen      Stockley 54

Morecambe drew 1-1 to Exeter City last night in a game that could’ve gone either way had more chances been taken.

It was a reasonably quiet first half at the Globe Arena, which was hosting its first game since December 1st.

Both sides had half chances, with Morecambe having some good attacking play but it came to nothing as no one managed to get on the end of threatening balls. The Shrimps’ best chance in the first half came in the first ten minutes, when Andy Fleming had a spectacular volley well saved by Exeter keeper Bobby Olejnik.

In the second half the Shrimps started very well, and in the 49th minute they were awarded a penalty after Adam Dugdale’s shot hit the hand of an Exeter defender. The referee hesitated but eventually awarded the penalty, and this was converted by Shaun Miller who scored his tenth goal of the season despite the keeper getting a slight touch to it.

Morecambe’s lead lasted only five minutes however, as Exeter equalised through debutant Jayden Stockley who scored a great volley from a pinpoint cross without any credible opposition from the Shrimps’ centre-halfs.

Following the equaliser, the Grecians began to control possession. However, Morecambe did have a brilliant chance to score from a set piece ten minutes after the equaliser. Jamie Devitt had a free kick just outside the box and his shot was goal bound, but Bobby Olejnik managed to parry the ball out for a corner.

Exeter City midfielder Tom McCready, who spent six months at the Globe Arena last season, found himself taking a free kick in a very similar position to Devitt at the other end and just like the Irishman, McCready’s free kick was goalbound but Roche managed to parry the ball out for a corner.

Paul Tisdale’s side dominated the majority of the second half, and could’ve sealed a win in the 88th minute through Jayden Stockley but his header hit the cross bar much to the relief of the Morecambe fans.

Morecambe were dealt with a massive blow when just after the the Fourth Official held up six added minutes on his board, Tom Barkhuizen collided with his keeper Barry Roche and he had to be stretchered off with an oxygen mask on.

As a result, Morecambe had to play the last six minutes with ten men as they’d used all their subs but they managed to hold on for a draw.

Next up for Jim Bentley’s side is Yeovil (H) on Saturday.
