Everton 2-0 Dagenham & Redbridge
Kone 32, Mirallas 85 pen
Everton progressed to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with a victory over League 2 side Dagenham & Redbridge at Goodison Park this afternoon, despite an unconvincing performance.
Roberto Martinez’s side had the majority of possession throughout the game, but weren’t brilliant in the final third. They created a couple of chances in the first fifteen minutes but they didn’t faze Mark Cousins in the Dagenham goal.
Everton did come very close to taking the lead in the 23rd minute through Ramiro Funes Mori who curled a shot on the edge of the box but it was well saved by Mark Cousins, as he tipped it over the bar.
Everton possessed the ball in the final third a lot but it took a while for them to open the scoring. However they did take the lead in the 32nd minute. Aaron Lennon was brought down by Ashley Hemmings near the right corner flag, and Bryan Oviedo put a ball in from the free kick that was met by the head of Arouna Kone and it beat Cousins from close range.
Everton went in at the break leading 1-0 thanks to Kone, and Dagenham’s only real chance of the half came in the 19th minute when Joss Labadie hit a powerful free kick straight at the Everton wall.
In the second half, Dagenham’s defence were very tight and compact and the Toffees struggled to break them down as they continued to have the majority of possession. John Still’s side posed no real threat going forward, and it was an easy afternoon for Joel Robles in the Everton goal.
Kevin Mirallas did come very close to doubling his side’s lead in the 73rd minute, when he had a shot kept out by Mark Cousins, who put in a good performance in the Dagenham goal.
Ten minutes later, Everton got a penalty after Kevin Mirallas was brought down by Nyron Nosworthy in the box and the Belgian international converted the resultant penalty.
The game was interrupted following the penalty, after a cat made its way onto the pitch so the away side had to wait to restart the game. A teenage boy also invaded the pitch in the 93rd minute, so the game finished in bizarre circumstances.
